One thought that I have been grappling with lately is how, at some very basic level, all specific definitions are arbitrary. For instance, the definition of the word pizza is really merely an agreement between many people that the vocal sounds that make the word “pizza” reference some kind of vague bread/(sometimes)sauce/ (sometimes)meat/(sometimes)vegetable combo. Really what even is a pizza?
I guess as a lover of words, I find the fact that what makes a thing a thing is merely an unconscious (and none too clear) social agreement to be slightly disturbing. Does anything have real meaning or is everything that exists really just one giant universe that we must arbitrarily break apart in order to make sense of it?
